Lession : Simple Solution

A lady bought some bathing soaps from a shop. When she opened one of the packets, she found that it was empty. There was no soap in there; it was just an empty wrapper! She lodged a complaint against the manufacturer and got her claim. That being settled, there was a task before the management of the soap factory. How had this happened? How could they ensure that the incident did not occur again? They had suffered enough bad publicity besides having to pay the compensation to the lady.

After a detailed investigation, it was discovered, that during the process of wrapping, it so happened that inevitably, one or two wrappers did get through, having no bar of soap in them! There was no way to make out the difference between a full wrapper and an empty one. The process of handling each one separately for this purpose seemed to be very cumbersome. So, the technical head was given the job of devising a method to overcome the problem. The man prepared a detailed report and proposed the setting up of a computer based system that would weigh and scan each bar, for the empty packs would not get detected by a normal x-ray machine. He proposed an expenditure of a large amount to put this system into place.

The management heard him out and passed the order to release the funds and to buy the machinery that he had proposed. An uneducated worker said, “Excuse me Sir, for my impertinence, but I have a solution that shall cost a fraction of what you are planning to go in for.â€

The management hesitated initially. But eventually they heard him out and agreed to try out his proposal. The next day, the worker brought a strong industrial fan. He put it at an angle near the conveyor belt on which the packed soap bars were coming through and switched it on. The few empty wrappers that came through got blown off by the fan! The rest of them went past easily.

A simple solution, for a complex problem! This goes to prove that ideas are not the monopoly of the educated.

The project location is not trusted

I met with such an error when I tried to open a project "The project location is not trusted"

Just googled for the resolution and found a really useful blog by Chris Craft.

here are the abstracts from  the same:

"This dialog box appears if you attempt to open or create a client project on a Universal Naming Convention (UNC) path. By default, a UNC path is not a trusted location for a project. Your project might not run correctly when you attempt to debug or run from this location.
 That is definitely the dialog box I was getting. Now I was concerned. One thing I am sure of, is that if my computer thinks my C:\ driver is an untrusted UNC path, I was going to be in a world of hurt, if I didn't find and fix the fundamental issue.
This information also concerned me because I was using a Virtual PC to try and open this project with. And I started to wondering if this was somehow playing a part in the issue."

Automated VSS Backup "Microsoft Visual Source Safe"

I just visited a  forum and found something useful for Microsoft Visual Source Savfe

Its a DOS script for VSS database backup.

2-change your backup path accordingly
(mine is f:\backups\)
3- change ur vss db.
(mine is D:\vssdb)
4- Add ur username,paswd after -y.
5-Use " " if having spaces between ur dir/file names.

LOL.. Thanks for the heads up.. I just loaded skype and was having problems after this... Been pulling my hair out trying to get to the root cause, I did the netstat and found a listener on 80 but the pid really didn't give a good indication...
I wanna move skype off 80... That seems to be a better method since I have control of my router... I might just delay start skype so IIS will own the port first, see if that causes "Smart Skype" to move off the port...
Anyway, Thank you! I didn't think skype was on it...

A developer was using AJAXControlToolkit in an application. Not a big deal. Except that it kept throwing that damn exception. You know the one:


Server Error in " Application.
Security Exception
Description: The application attempted to perform an operation not allowed by the security policy. To grant this application the required permission please contact your system administrator or change the application's trust level in the configuration file.

Exception Details: System.Security.SecurityException: Request for the permission of type 'System.Web.AspNetHostingPermission, System, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089′ failed.

I know what you're going to say, but I prefer to not use caspol.exe to set the trust.

There were several other sites on the server using the toolkit that worked fine, without using caspol to set full trust.
